How to winterise a swimming pool is a topic that troubles many users. What about the pool for the winter? How do you protect the pool? Should you pour out the water? Is there a special means of winterisation? These and many other questions are asked by every pool owner. After all, proper maintenance and protection will avoid costly repairs and allow you to get up and running quickly when the warm days arrive. Just as we take care of our skin from the damaging effects of frost, we also need to take care of our pool. So what should you do before winter takes us by surprise?
- The swimming pool should be taken out of use in winter
- Do not empty the water completely, but reduce the water level below the nozzles
- The pool basin should be thoroughly cleaned and covered.
- Store all equipment and attractions in a warm and dry place
- Throwing special buoys into the water will prevent the pool water from freezing

Time is money, and in this age of a rushing world, it is hard for us to find a moment even for ourselves. That is why people are making life easier for themselves. These days, swimming pool hoovers seem to be indispensable for keeping a swimming pool clean quickly and easily.
Read moreListen to the manufacturer's recommendations!
Manufacturers of equipment such as counterflows, heat pumps and water massages include in their instructions how to prepare the equipment. It is worth familiarising yourself with these. Most of them can be dismantled and moved to a warm, dry place for the winter. A well-prepared pool for the winter will make it easier to get it up and running in the summer. Thorough cleaning of algae and tarnish is not necessary, but bear in mind that after a few months there will be even more of it. We will then have to work hard to get rid of them.
Of course, these universal principles must be adapted to the conditions found. The parameters of the water in each tank are different, so it is necessary to have the appropriate tests or measuring equipment before proceeding.

Should the pool water be drained?
Water and negative temperatures = ice formation. This process is familiar to everyone. Water increases in volume during freezing. Probably everyone has at least once forgotten about a bottle in the freezer that later burst. So many people ask themselves, should they pour the water out for the winter? Paradoxically, emptying the tank completely is a very bad move and we should not do it under any circumstances. As we already know, when water freezes, it increases in volume. Although we cannot see it with the naked eye, the water in the soil is also subject to this process. This one puts pressure on the walls of the pool and can cause painful damage to our wallet.
The obvious conclusion, then, is that water should not be poured away, but neither should it simply be left behind. So what should you do? Lower its level according to a universal rule - the water line should be less than 20 cm from the skimmer, jets or any other elements of the basin. It is important that the water line does not touch the pool lamps. Depending on the position of the jets, the lamps should be fully submerged or uncovered. In the case of prefabricated pools, you should look at the instructions. There, the manufacturer tells you how to winterise the pool and to what level to drain the water.
How to clean the pool?
Cleaning your pool is a process that should be carried out on an ongoing basis during the season. Regular maintenance will mean that we will have a lot less work to do before winterisation. While we may not have time for thorough cleaning during the season, preparing for winterisation is the time for meticulous cleaning. A reduced water level will make our job easier. First and foremost, you should remove any tarnish and sediment on the walls of the pool; special brushes and cleaners will help with this. The more we have worked during the season, the less work we will have to do before winter. Just as the more work we do now, the less work we do before the season.
Dirt, deposits or green tarnish can appear on the walls. Be sure to choose the right product for the surface so as not to damage the pool. Any larger dirt such as leaves should be fished out. If you do not clean the basin, algae will multiply and will have to be cleaned in the summer. Remember that swimming in dirty water can be hazardous to your health

Take care of the parameters of the pool water
Crystal-clear water - every pool owner knows how much work it is to keep it that way. Green or cloudy water, foam - who doesn't know these problems during the summer season. In winter, we also have to take care of the water we leave in the tank. Special chemicals can help us with this. Remember that if you are going to clean the pool basin, you should do so before adjusting the water parameters. Just like in summer, in winter we also need to take care of the pH level of the water. The same chemicals as in summer will help us with this. An optimal pH level prevents the growth of algae and other microorganisms. The pH value must remain within a rigid range between 7.0 and 7.4. It is best to test this level with a suitable tester.
Only when the optimum pH level has been reached can we use special preparations for winter. There are plenty of products on the market to protect and preserve your pool in autumn and winter. Contrary to what you might think, these products are not about protecting against ice formation. Their purpose is to prevent fouling.
Don't let the pool water freeze
When water freezes and turns to ice, it increases in volume. This can cause damage and, at the same time, we cannot get rid of the water completely from the tank. What to do in such a situation? You probably thought of some chemical to prevent it from freezing. If so, what was the point of fighting for the right water parameters? Since you want to destroy them with additional measures affecting the water. So, how do you protect yourself from ice? There is a simple trick. Just throw floating objects into the pool - these can be buoys, floats, plastic bottles, basically anything that floats on the surface. The most important thing is to spread them out evenly over the surface of the water and not just concentrate them in one place.

Expert Advises!
Wintering plugs will not allow water to enter the system. This one could freeze and burst the elements.

Remember about devices
Water attractions and other equipment should not be forgotten. Some of them can be easily dismantled and stored in a warm, dry place. This will avoid costly repairs and they will last longer. Every installation should be blown out after dismantling to remove any water. It is worth taking this time for maintenance and inspection. Early detection of faults will ensure trouble-free operation throughout the season. It's also a good idea to cover your prepared swimming pool with plastic sheeting to prevent dirt from falling in. For this, you'll need special tensioned covers, as ordinary ones won't withstand the pressure of the snow and will collapse into the water.
All this applies, of course, to pools that are permanently installed in our gardens. But what if you have a rack and strut pool in your garden?
How to winter a rack pool?
On allotments, but also at home gardens, we can often come across strut or rack pools. This is a cheaper alternative that does not permanently interfere with the landscape. They can be easily dismantled, so can the above advice be followed ? The answer is MAY, but in their case it is advisable to prepare them for wintering a little differently. We can drain the water completely from such a tank, as it is not affected by ground water. Rack and strut pools can be disassembled. It is worth doing this and storing them in a warm place. However, remember to clean it thoroughly! Otherwise it will give off a bad smell.
As you can see, preparing your pool for winterisation is an uncomplicated process that requires no specialist knowledge. The most important thing is to remember the basic principles and steps. You will find the right products and tools for winterisation in our shop. Remember that it is advisable to use high-quality chemistry for more thorough cleaning. Our advice will help you get your pool up and running more easily and quickly during the season, and after all, we still have those drinks with palm trees in our heads....

This is not required, although we recommend doing it. This will make it easier to get the pool up and running in the spring when it gets warmer.
They are usually in a technical room where they are sheltered from the weather. However, it's a good idea to get rid of any water from them so they don't freeze. If we have them outside, they should be hidden under a canopy.
A poor pH level will render the winterising agent ineffective. Algae and debris will accumulate more, making it harder for us to clean the pool before the season.
They are intended to prevent water from entering the pool system, which can freeze in winter. Increased water volume can cause costly damage.
